A day at Es Calo

Monday 11th August 2014

The skipper decided this morning that instead of walking the plank….probably more preferable…Billy should go up the mast and take some photos 'from above'. So after donning the rather large blue and yellow 'nappy' I was hoisted up the mast…swinging around uncontrollably until I reached the top! I used to like climbing the ropes when I was at school but this was a whole new experience….for a start, the platform from which I was being hoisted was not a stable one…it was sitting on top of wobbly wobbly water, secondly I was not in control …not something I like much (!!!) and thirdly, it was a long way up! BT assured me he wouldn't walk away and leave me there for the day….he was true to his word and looked after me very well!

So…here are some of the ariel shots that I took….I'm afraid i didn't have enough control or stability to frame them all properly, so please excuse the quality!

After that exciting little escapade, it was time to retreat to the shore for a much needed coffee….and croissant…which definitely wasn't needed!!!

We really like Es Calo. The water is so clear here, you can see the bottom as you look over the side of Windekind…I love to watch the changing patterns of the sand beneath the waves and the fish as they swim idly by. The small 'harbour 'is a semi circle of boat ramps leading to boat houses.

It's a small tourist town with several apartments, a supermarket…very small…and that's about it! But it is incredibly charming, and we really like it. There's a much slower pace of life here, compared to being by the port at La Savina…so tranquil.

As we left the tiny harbour, Billy jumped over the side of Mango Tango and went for a snorkel amongst the reefs….it was absolutely amazing. So many fish, so close. It's unbelievable how unaffected they seem to be by your presence….you can get up so close, and if you happen to look behind you, you will often find a trail of small fish behind you…just like the kids game when the children creep up behind an adult and the freeze when the adult spins around…the fish are the same…almost whistling nonchalantly and and looking the other way as you turn round!

We both had a snorkel around the bay a little later and saw many more fish, seaweed waving gently in the movement of the water, reflections of the sun on the sandy sea bed…and for BT a time to collect more sand for our jar at home!

Just as we were settling in for the evening with a Crabbies and Desperado, the wind picked up and we reluctantly decided that we would have to move back to the other side of the island (about a 3hour trip). It was a difficult decision to make as it was already late and we knew we would be anchoring in the dark. It was the right decision and we eventually anchored off of the beach in calm water.

We did however see another amazing sunset as we sailed along….
